Join Adventure Cycling Now!

As you no doubt already know, BikeOvernights.org is an initiative of Adventure Cycling Association, the premier bicycle-travel organization in North America. I would like to take this opportunity in the first post of 2014 to tell you about just a handful of organizational news bits and recent happenings.

Adventure Cycling is stronger than ever. As detailed in this article from the daily Missoulian, in 2013 Adventure Cycling's membership grew by 3.3 percent to hit an all time high of 46,724, meaning we've retained our position as the largest cycling membership organization in North America. We also saw a record number of tour signups, with a 6 percent increase in participation over 2012. In all, we ran more than 70 guided tours with 1,360 participants.

On January 2nd, we launched our second annual Bicycle Travel Video Contest. The contest is open to submissions until June 30, 2014, so there's plenty of time still to ride, shoot, and edit. You can view last year's winning entries here for ideas and inspiration. (Note that the categories have changed slightly for 2014; rather than a Bike Overnight video category it's a Short Tour category for rides less than a week long.)

In the arena of routes and mapping, we're continuing to work on Bicycle Route 66, and we'll soon be introducing a Great Divide-inspired off-pavement route that's going to be a doozy: the Idaho Hot Springs Mountain Bike Route. And, speaking of the Great Divide, we recently published edition two of the guidebook Cycling the Great Divide (the first major revision of the book since 2000!) and created a spectacular new routes highlights video.

Are you not yet a member of Adventure Cycling, but would like to receive inspiration and armchair adventure the year around? Join by January 12th and we'll send you our beautiful 2014 Bicycle Travel Calendar for free. We want to grow that 46,724 number even larger, so we're reaching out to more new cyclists all the time. Already a member? Share this Adventure Cycling offer with your friends who aren't. They’ll thank you every time an issue of Adventure Cyclist magazine arrives in the mail!
