Don't wait to go cross-country. Go overnight.
My love for bicycling began with a bike overnight with the Girl Scouts many years ago. Luckily, after taking a new job and making a move one year ago, I'm now able to bike commute to work -- and, along the way, drop off our son at preschool. His Weehoo bicycle trailer has been the best “baby” purchase we've made since the swing that plays lullabies!
